You must pass 3 qualifying tests to become an ADI. Part 1 is a Theory and Hazard Perception Test, Part 2 is a 1 hour Driving Test and Part 3 is an Instructional Ability Test where the examiner sits in the back of your car and assesses your ability.

You’re allowed 3 attempts at each Part 2 and Part 3 tests. You must also complete the qualifying process within 2 years of passing the ADI Part 1 test.

Once you have completed Part 2 and done 40 hours training towards Part 3, you can take out a Trainee Licence. This enables you to start earning and gaining experience before taking the final Part 3 Test.

Your first step to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is to read the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) guide to the Approved Driving Instructor register. Click Here.
